ALAC Principles

• Active Learning for Active Citizenship starts with community concerns and combines the principles and practices of informal adult education with those of community development.

• It establishes programmes following a cycle of reflection and action. Such learning programmes have to be flexible enough to accommodate learners’ individual needs and circumstances.

• It should not be prescriptive, but instead encourage learning providers and participants to develop their own learning opportunities.

• It is based on the following core values:

Social justice
Participation
Diversity and Equality
Cooperation

• They are reflected in the three principles that define the learning process:

Learner centred
Active and reflective
Community based
